Gudi Padwa Images

Dear Friends,

Happy Gudi Padwa

Gudhi Padwa is the Marathi name for Chaitra shukala Pratipada and as New Year's Day for Maharashtrians and Hindu Konkanis in India. It is the first day of the Hindu calendar month Chaitra (March-April as per the Gregorian calendar).
This Festival is also celebrated in other parts of India known as:

  • Ugadi in Andhra Predesh
  • Yugadi in Karnataka
  • Samvastsar Padvo among Hindu Konkanis of Goa
  • Cheti Chand among the Sindhi people
  • Navreh among Kashmiri Pandits
Gudi is representing many symbols and significant as King Flag/Bramadhwaj shows recreation process and growth is happening in our home. For this reason, all symbols of creation like water, symbolised by the upturned copper vessel, leaves of mango and neem that are fresh during this season. Yellow and green cloth which is a lakshan or symbol of saubhagya forms the gudi. The gathi made of sugar is tied around it to turn away evil influences.
I wish you and your family have Healthy and Wealthy Gudi Padwa this year.
